Winter Works
June 11, 2026Winter Camping Tips:

Winter at De Hollandsche Molen Resort offers a completely different kind of getaway experience. The crisp mountain air, peaceful surroundings, flowing rivers and cosy atmosphere make winter one of the most relaxing seasons to visit the resort. Whether you are arriving with a caravan, camping trailer, tent or staying in a chalet, a little preparation can ensure a warm, comfortable and enjoyable stay during the colder months.
Prepare for Wet Weather
Winter in the Western Cape often brings rain and cooler temperatures. Before travelling, ensure that caravans, tents and awnings are properly waterproofed. Check all seals, canvas stitching, roof joints and windows for possible leaks. It is always advisable to pack extra ground sheets, waterproof covers and absorbent mats to help keep interiors dry and mud-free.
Chalet guests should also bring suitable winter clothing, warm blankets and comfortable indoor footwear, especially for early mornings and evenings when temperatures can drop significantly.
Heating and Warmth
Safe heating is essential during winter camping. Portable gas heaters and approved electrical heaters may provide additional comfort, but guests should always ensure adequate ventilation and follow safety guidelines. Never leave heaters unattended, and avoid overloading electrical points.
Electric blankets, hot water bottles and thermal bedding can greatly improve comfort levels during cold nights. Layered bedding works particularly well in mountain environments where temperatures may fluctuate overnight.
For caravan owners, insulated window covers and draught stoppers can help retain warmth inside the unit.
Dress for the Season
The secret to winter comfort is layering. Warm jackets, waterproof coats, beanies, gloves and thermal clothing make outdoor activities far more enjoyable. Even on rainy days, the natural beauty of DHM remains spectacular and rewarding to experience.
Comfortable waterproof shoes or boots are highly recommended, especially after rainfall when pathways and campsites may become wet.
Enjoy Indoor Comfort
Winter camping is not only about outdoor adventure — it is also about slowing down and relaxing. Bring along board games, books, cards, puzzles and movies for cosy evenings indoors. Hot drinks, soups and traditional winter meals create the perfect atmosphere for quality family time.
Braai areas can still be enjoyed during winter, provided weather conditions allow. A warm fire, good company and mountain scenery make for memorable evenings at the resort.
Safety During Winter
Guests are encouraged to remain mindful of changing weather conditions during winter months. Heavy rainfall may result in slippery surfaces, swollen rivers or temporary flooding in low-lying areas. Children should always be supervised near watercourses.
Vehicles should be parked on stable ground where possible, and valuable equipment should be stored securely during wet weather conditions.
